Councilmember Yvette Alexander was born, raised and educated in Washington, D. C., and has spent many years advocating for long term progressive change for all Ward 7 citizens.

In her first term as the Ward 7 Councilmember she introduced six pieces of legislation:

  • Building Hope Real Property Tax Exemption and Equitable Real Property Tax Relief Emergency *Amendment Act of 2007
  • Enhanced Security at Gas Stations Amendment Act of 2007
  • Children’s Optical Health Expansion Act of 2007
  • Fire Hydrant Inspection, Repair, Maintenance and Fire Preparedness Temporary Amendment Act of 2007
  • The Ward 7 Anti-Sale of Single Containers of Alcoholic Beverages Amendment Act of 2008
  • District of Columbia Youth Council Establishment Act of 2008
  • She has also co-introduced 21 and sponsored numerous others.

She has also won several prestigious rewards including the Paula Nickens Grassroots Award from the District of Columbia Democratic State Committee and the Lorraine Whitlock- Democrat of the Year from the Ward 7 Democrats. Most recently Councilmember Alexander received the Ward 7/8 HIV/AIDS Collaborative Service Award and the Washington D.C. Pan-Hellenic Council’s Unsung Hero Award.

As the former Chair of Ward 7 Democrats’, Voter Education and Registration, a current member of the Ward 7 Democrats, the DC Democratic State Committee (DCDSC) elected Ward 7 Representative, Penn Branch Citizens Civic Association, Friends of the Francis Gregory Library, Advisory Board Member of the Hillcrest Recreation Center, and Board Member, Southeast Tennis and Education Council, the Councilmember is committed to advocating for a better way of life for all Ward 7 residents.

At the 2004 Democratic Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, she was sent as the only female representative who lobbied other state delegations to support DC Voting Rights. She was elected again, in 2008 as the District of Columbia Add-On Unpledged Delegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. She served on the “Get out the Vote (GOTV),” team for the District of Columbia’s first in the Nation Primary, which surpassed previous voter turnout records.

Councilmember Alexander has spent much of her adult life in the health care and community service industries. Employed in 1993 by Chartered Health Plan, she served as a health care consultant advocating for access to improved health care services for Ward 7 and District wide citizens. Continuing with her career in health care, Councilmember was hired as a Consultant with American Preferred Provider Plan’s Early and Periodic Screening Diagnosis and Treatment Program (EPSDT) for infants through 18 year olds. Later, Councilmember began working with the D. C. Department of Insurance, Securities, and Banking, where she spent nearly five years as an Insurance Regulator. She began her professional career in management with United Airlines Inc.

At the early age of 14, Councilmember began her community service in Ward 7, where she mentored under the late Lorraine H. Whitlock. In 1998, she was elected as the Ward 7 Female Representative on the D.C. Democratic State Committee (DCDSC), where she has served two terms. On the DCDSC, Councilmember served as Chair of the Voter Education and Affirmative Action Committee and served two terms as Corresponding Secretary.

Councilmember Alexander attended public and private schools in the District of Columbia, received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Howard University and began graduate work at Trinity College. Councilmember Yvette Alexander knows that Ward 7 residents need more and deserve better and she has worked hard to serve the interest of the residents. She is a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, where she serves on the Parish Council.

She has also supported and promoted educational and health-related initiatives introduced by the Ward 7 Democrats.
  • Award recipient, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and the Louisiana Insurance Department for her efforts in New Orleans, LA assisting residents who were affected by the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
  • President of the DC Chapter of the International Black Women's Congress
  • Host, the Washington DC historical tour for the Prairie View University Criminal Justice Department’s, Youth Outreach Program and has been honored for her service and commitment to the program.
